After a long discussion about dreams, I believe this is the plan:
online shop > something along the lines of Milk Bar > umbrella shop with matching dresses and wallpaper > BKL lifestyle building > post retirement all-day breakfast place.

Celebrated my 24th birthday by riding a bicycle and eating a Rilakkuma cake ; dinner at Eight ; awful cupcakes ; perfect meringue ; a sign to stop people (like me) from hugging Totoro stuffed toys.

I ended the rabbit year with death, a surprising one. At the service I’m told he’s going back into the arms of heaven, comforting words to soothe the hearts of those left behind to suffer his absence. As the others sang hymns with their hands in the air, I thought about how my parents could only have another 12 years to live, and the thought alone made me choke.

I spent the last couple of days of 2011 sipping coffee in Tiong Bahru; eating meekia for breakfast; setting up a barbecue (quite foolishly with newspapers around it); eating until my stomach hurt and then eating some more; dreaming about what 2012 might bring.

Five best events this year:
Finishing my honours thesis and that wooshhh light feeling
Graduation and having one of those ‘the world is my oyster’ moments
Vacationing in Hong Kong - visiting the sea and eating a lot of good food with friends I love
Time in the honours room and in class trying to soak in other people’s intellect as much as possible
Having meals at counters...

I’ve said this before and I’ll say this again, if I had it my way, I’ll wear only J. Crew and Madewell for the rest of my life. The shoes in looks 1-3 are really calling out to me.

This is the kind of food photography I admire. The gorgeous lady behind the lens is just an added bonus.

Sausalito, CA.
We took a day trip to Sausalito where I had the most delicious bouillabaisse and eggs benedict pimped with Maine lobster. Sometimes, the restaurants you stumble upon are much better than the ones you spend hours researching (and building up expectations) on. As you can tell, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

I just returned from San Francisco and took on a 6-day work week. My internet usage (and amount of free time in general) has been reduced by 80% which takes a little getting used to. In the meantime, enjoy this video and those lips.

“You never felt jealousy, did you, Miss Eyre? Of course not: I need not ask you; because you never felt love. You have both sentiments yet to experience: your soul sleeps: the shock is yet to be given which shall waken it. You think all existence lapses in quiet a flow as that in which your youth has hitherto slid away. Floating on with closed eyes and muffled ears, you neither see the...

Lemon tartlets.

I just fulfilled my first order! The downside: You can’t eat anything. The upside: If you’re lucky, you’re left with a little extra lemon curd, which is delicious when spread over toast.

Lemon cupcakes for birthday girl, Danie!
//
I dumped 12 chocolate cupcakes yesterday. My tale of woe in four parts: said cupcakes 1) were very difficult to make, 2) didn’t taste very good (unacceptable considering previous point), 3) grew mould after 2 days, and 4) reinforced my failure at making meringue frosting that doesn’t deceive me by being all successful-tasting and glossy...

You know you’re in some kind of a rut when you*:
make mayonaise from scratch
watch FNL 5 days a week
don’t set your alarm clock
drizzle salted caramel directly into a tub of ice-cream, and eat it for breakfast
calculate your fibre intake
*These may or may not apply to my life.

One of my favourite things to admire is interior design. Erin Fetherston’s Holly Hunt candle chandelier embellished with vintage silk roses is particularly fascinating. It also seems like we both share a love for raw-cut stone; it’s nice to know that I’m similar to Erin Fetherston in some minute way.

Everyone, I have reached a pâte brisée milestone! I’ve also been slowly building my brunch food repertoire so I’m going to start a series of sorts. Expect eggs benedict, bacon and shiitake quiche, and blueberry-banana wholewheat muffins.

The taste that dare not speak its name
Excerpts from David Friedman for GQ, June 2011
He’s something I’m afraid to say out loud. I like Feist. I know I’m not supposed to like Feist. I’m not even sure how I know that, but I do. Her voice is too pretty, edgeless, located only in the most harmonically pleasing registers. Saying you like Feist is like not having an opinion,...

Political rally essentials
1. Loose clothing; 2. Fan; 3. Umbrella; 4. Facial mist; 5. Tissues; 6. Water
//
I’m voting for the first time in the Singapore General Election and it’s all terribly exciting. Given Singapore’s one-party history, voting is (sadly) a privilege, not a right. It is only through political contestation can people feel like they have a real stake in this country, so I encourage all...
