The kind of food that you wait 1 hour for and slurp down in less than 15 minutes and think, damn, that was good.

Lunch: salt-grilled fish, my favourite way of eating fish; more gushing over Oscar; an extremely successful cookout - chunky cauliflower soup, spicy potato cakes, grilled prawns, pan-seared scallops, squid ink pasta with peppers, avocado and gula melaka mousse, coconut apple cinnamon macarons and wine.
I wouldn’t spend Saturday any other way.

Coffee and carrot cake on garden furniture; after the most dreadful day at work: claypot rice with beers and ciders; Oscar charming the socks off everyone; my friends’ combined effort:apple crumble bar with vanilla ice-cream, a reminder that my heart remains with good old American style desserts.

Hal: Well, let’s say that since you were little, you always dreamed of getting a lion. And you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and you wait, but the lion doesn’t come. And along comes a giraffe. You can be alone, or you can be with the giraffe. Oliver: I’d wait for the lion. Hal: That’s why I worry about...

Using Dr. Hauschka’s Facial Steam Bath; mousse; the yakiniku obsession continues; a movie I didn’t enjoy with a line I liked:
“Life seemed to be filled with things that were just like the ghost orchid - wonderful to imagine and easy to fall in love with, but a little fantastic, fleeting and out of reach.”

Missed Connections is a book by Sophie Blackall which, for me, seems like a very lovely way to explore the issue of anonymity and transience in urban settings. The above video is about her work.

A bit of a yakiniku obsession lately; ramen remains one of my favourite comfort foods; experiments; Laurent Bernard’s souffle and crispy chocolate tart were both excellent, and I don’t even usually like chocolate.

After a long discussion about dreams, I believe this is the plan:
online shop > something along the lines of Milk Bar > umbrella shop with matching dresses and wallpaper > BKL lifestyle building > post retirement all-day breakfast place.

I ended the rabbit year with death, a surprising one. At the service I’m told he’s going back into the arms of heaven, comforting words to soothe the hearts of those left behind to suffer his absence. As the others sang hymns with their hands in the air, I thought about how my parents could only have another 12 years to live, and the thought alone made me choke.

I spent the last couple of days of 2011 sipping coffee in Tiong Bahru; eating meekia for breakfast; setting up a barbecue (quite foolishly with newspapers around it); eating until my stomach hurt and then eating some more; dreaming about what 2012 might bring.

Five best events this year:
Finishing my honours thesis and that wooshhh light feeling
Graduation and having one of those ‘the world is my oyster’ moments
Vacationing in Hong Kong - visiting the sea and eating a lot of good food with friends I love

Sausalito, CA.
We took a day trip to Sausalito where I had the most delicious bouillabaisse and eggs benedict pimped with Maine lobster. Sometimes, the restaurants you stumble upon are much better than the ones you spend hours researching (and building up expectations) on. As you can tell, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.

“You never felt jealousy, did you, Miss Eyre? Of course not: I need not ask you; because you never felt love. You have both sentiments yet to experience: your soul sleeps: the shock is yet to be given which shall waken it. You think all existence lapses in quiet a flow as that in which your youth has hitherto slid away. Floating on with closed eyes and muffled ears, you neither see the...

I just fulfilled my first order! The downside: You can’t eat anything. The upside: If you’re lucky, you’re left with a little extra lemon curd, which is delicious when spread over toast.

Lemon cupcakes for birthday girl, Danie!
//
I dumped 12 chocolate cupcakes yesterday. My tale of woe in four parts: said cupcakes 1) were very difficult to make, 2) didn’t taste very good (unacceptable considering previous point), 3) grew mould after 2 days, and 4) reinforced my failure at making meringue frosting that doesn’t deceive me by being all successful-tasting and glossy...
